Sardinia is such a wonderful place to attend an Open Source symposium! This is the 10th edition of the GFOSS in Italy. Being very active in the development of GRASS GIS for quite a long time, Italians are true pioneers in organizing this kind of event. Operations and presentations ran smooth. The local Italian Chapter of OSGeo, which is in charge of organizing the event, was created two years ago. It is composed of very active members of the OSGeo community, particularly in GRASS and QGIS softwares.
Among the new technologies presented - the latest version of MapFish aside 
, I would like to point the upcoming release of GRASS version 6.4 and its GUI Python (that we had already seen in June 2008), and the recent release of RATMAN. RATMAN, resulting from promising research and development, has impressed the meeting attendees. It is a 3D rendering engine based on OpenGL which will certainly be incorporated into GRASS and/or QGIS. RATMAN’s performances and image compression capabilities exceed Google Earth’s. It is a particularly interesting 3D client for consulting data coming from a map server, considering its compatibility with OGC WMS and WFS standards.
After CASCADOSS and the latest Italian GFOSS, our European tour of Europe goes on, with Spain and Germany as our next destinations.

Quel magnifique endroit que la Sardaigne pour un colloque Open Source ! Quel accueil ! Quelle gastronomie !
C’est la dixième édition des GFOSS en Italie. Les Italiens ont vraiment été des précurseurs dans l’organisation de ce genre de manifestation, notamment dû au fait qu’ils ont depuis longtemps été très actifs dans le développement de GRASS. Les rouages sont donc bien huilés et les présentations se sont enchaînées sans aucun souci. Le local Chapter Italien de l’OSGeo, qui a en charge l’organisation de l’événement, existe quant à lui depuis deux ans. Il est composé de membres très actifs dans les communautés, notamment celles de GRASS et de QGIS.
Parmi les nouveautés techniques annoncées, outre les dernières nouvelles de MapFish , je retiens la sortie imminente de la version 6.4 de GRASS et de son GUI Python (que nous avions déjà pu voir en juin 2008), ainsi que le très impressionnant RATMAN, dont la release a été achevée juste avant la conférence. RATMAN a bluffé l’assemblée et sera très certainement intégré à GRASS et/ou QGIS. Il s’agit d’un moteur de rendu 3D basé sur OpenGL et qui est le fruit de travaux de recherche. Les performances et la compression des images dépassent les performances de Google Earth. Sa compatibilité avec les normes de l’OGC, WMS et WFS notamment, en font un client 3D particulièrement intéressant pour la consultation de données métiers issues de serveur cartographiques.
Après CASCADOSS et le présent GFOSS italien, notre tournée de l’Europe se poursuit tranquillement avec au programme des prochaines semaines, l’Espagne et l’Allemagne .
