As last year, Bolsena is the place for the European OSGeo hacking event.
Gathering people from various community (GeoNetwork opensource, Mapbender, Degree, GeoServer, Grass…) the OSGeo hacking event started this morning in Bolsena, Italy.
Around ten people from GeoNetwork community started on finalizing the 2.4.0 release.
An IRC channel was set up for the event, feel free to join us (Channel – #bolsena).

I just got the new Android based mobile phone HTC Magic . It is a really cool piece of technology; what a change compared to my previous phone, a Palm Treo 650! I actually wasn’t expecting that much from Android phones. One of the best surprise for the moment is DroidCollector , a cool application that helps you a lot for OSM surveying . You can easily record GPS tracks set the mapfeatures live with just a click, record voice annotation, etc … A quite youg application, but already very useful, even if a few improvements in ergonomy would help (and too bad it’s just free but not Open Source). The HTC is maybe not as fast and not as sensitive as a plain GPS device, but you always have on you and in just one click you start a track acquisition. There is also a forum thread on OpenStreetMap. Good surveying!
MapFish Framework has been used by the Joint Research Center of the European Commision to create a prototype INSPIRE geoportal and allows discovery and viewing of spatial data sets.
The INSPIRE geoportal provide the means to search for spatial data sets and spatial data services, and subject to access restrictions, view and download spatial data sets from the EU Member States within the framework of the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community (INSPIRE) Directive.

Lately, several Swiss data producers announced the availability of WMS server with high resolution data that can be used for open digitization of OpenStreetMap features:
These high quality data source will certainly contribute to rapildy increase the quantity and quality of OSM data for those regions. Let’s hope that other donations and/or WMS access will be available in the future for other part of Switzerland.

Just before the 0.5 release, the GeoExt contributors have created a new website: http://www.geoext.org with a lot of content like documentation, tutorials, example. The current trac will be kept to manage development aspects.
Studio has been extended to provide a full configuration solution for the creation of web 2.0 mapping applications (see previous post). With it, you can publish your geodata over internet without development skills and without edition of any file !! And you can provide advanced functionality like editing, printing, tooltip or search.
