Amazon Web Services presents on its website a detailed case study on the deployment on the cloud of the Federal Geographical Data by Swisstopo, the Swiss Federal Office of Topography.

Camptocamp successfully carried out this implementation thanks to the collaborative work of its “Geospatial Solutions” and “Infrastructure Solutions” teams.

This innovative Web 2.0 project was made possible thanks to:

1. the use of the MapFish Framework, whose flexibility and modern architecture fully use cloud hosting,

2. the implementation of an infrastructure fully observing the philosophy of the cloud, particularly the use of a system of deployment and of server management automation,

3. the skills and top-notch competencies of Camptocamp engineering teams,

4. a perfect command of these new technologies.

This study shows the flexibility of the implemented solutions, from a highly efficient and adaptable Web-GIS project set-up on a virtual server to a complete SDI, hosted on the cloud and consisting of more than 50 servers.

Ce projet Web2.0 novateur a été rendu possible grâce à:

1. l’utilisation du Framework MapFish dont la flexibilité et l’architecture moderne s’intègrent idéalement dans un hébergement sur le cloud,
2. la mise en œuvre d’une infrastructure respectant 100% la philosophie du cloud et notamment l’utilisation d’un système de déploiement et  d’automatisation de la gestion des serveurs,
3. les compétences de pointe des équipes d’ingénieurs de Camptocamp ainsi
4. qu’une maîtrise d’ouvrage convaincue des avantages de ces nouvelles technologies.

Cette étude de cas montre en filigrane la souplesse des solutions mises en œuvre par Camptocamp, allant d’un projet WebSig hautement performant et adaptable installé sur un serveur virtuel jusqu’à une IDS complète hébergée sur le cloud comprenant plusieurs dizaines de serveurs.

The term Location Intelligence refers to all those processes, technologies, applications and practices capable to combine spatial data (Geographical Information System) with business data (Business Intelligence), in order to gain critical insights, to better support decision-making processes and to optimize business activities. In other words, Location Intelligence allows to connect various types of information to cartographic data, to locate them and to consequently increase the value of the existing information systems.

The initiative aims to aggregate companies, organizations, project communities and individuals into an open community aiming to foster the cooperation in the Location Intelligence domain and to support research activities. This allows to convert the results into innovative enterprise applications as well as to enrich and integrate the existing Open Source GIS and BI solutions, through the adoption of open standards.

Membership is open to anyone who shares the initiative vision and organization. Besides Camptocamp, charter member , the initiative members include the Italian companies Engineering Group and Inova Open Solutions, the French company Altic, the Canadian company Spatialytics and the SESAR research lab, Information Technology Department, University of Milan.

The initiative promotes the creation of a network of support services, according to which the initiative members provide professional support to the developed solutions .

Together with Altic and other partners, Camptocamp is already involved in GEO+ , a Web 2.0 research project. GEO+’s goal is to develop an open source platform allowing for content management, indexation and data analysis combined with spatial data. The project will focus in particular on the connection between Mapfish and open source Business Intelligence solutions.

As a IS Project Manager, you are able to understand clients’ needs, outline project requirement specifications and lead a project team focusing on developing a new generation of geospatial applications.

Today, Camptocamp announced the release of MapFish-1.2.

MapFish, an Open Source Web development framework, was created by Camptocamp and developed thanks to the inputs of the OpenLayers and Ext communities, especially in the area of graphical user interface. MapFish runs ExtJS, a JavaScript Web 2.0 library,  so as to offer users a clear and ergonomic interface.  Furthermore, MapFish can be deployed on Php, Java, Ruby or Python Web servers, widening the compatibility of the development environments of users.

On the occasion of this release, Mapfish Web site was improved: www.mapfish.org (http://www.mapfish.org )

This release includes the following new great features:

• a super-easy installation procedure on Linux and Windows;
• Python 2.6 and Pylons 0.9.7 support;
• GeoExt 0.6 integration;
• numerous improvements of the MapFish protocol for selecting data and attributes;
• a client plug-in facilitating the JavaScript libraries setup;
• ameliorations and corrections of various widgets.
